When I was leaving the St. Mary’s KOA campground on the east side of Glacier National Park on Day 4 I met a guy who excitedly recommended I ride highways 36 and 89 across California and down to Tahoe, and so that’s what I did yesterday and today. It was a good recommendation!
My first few miles along Lake Tahoe I rode through some residential areas that I’m guessing are some of the priciest real estate in the country. And then those ended and the real vistas opened up! This is a beautiful party of the country!
I did enjoy riding down the Pacific coast, but I’m really a mountains guy at heart.
I was hoping to ride through Yosemite tomorrow, especially the Tuolumne high country, but they’re expecting 3 to 6 inches of snow tomorrow and Sunday. Same with Sequoia. And it’s going to get down to 35 degrees here where I’m camping tonight. So, since I’m on a motorcycle, I’m thinking I’ll fast-track it for the desert. I was also hoping to ride through Death Valley, but that’s closed until mid-October. At least I can ride by Death Valley.
If I put this idea into action I should be at the Grand Canyon on Sunday, and then work my way through Utah and Colorado.
This evening I was talking with another camper here at the campground when a guy looking for his campsite rolled by in a pickup pulling an enclosed trailer that had motorcycle stickers on the back door. I went to talk to him, and when he turned to me I stopped and said, “I recognize you. You were in a BDR video.” And he was! His name is Nathan and he was one of the riders in the Oregon BDR video they just released this year. Small world.
